Materials:
1 1/4 yd. Of tan Muslin for foundation, assorted co-ord fabrics,
1 1/4 yd. White Fabric for border, 48 x 34" piece of pre-quilted
material for backing, thread, liquid fray check, fabric glue,
5 yds. Heavy duty fusible paper-backed webbing
(Embellishments;
beads, fabric paint, markers, rubber stamps w/ fabric ink, misc.
objects, etc.)
Laying
out your quilt blocks:
- Cut out
four blocks 13" x 20" of muslin (this is your foundation)
and pin them to a piece of foam core.
- Take scraps
of fabric and cut them into shapes and sizes that will accommodate
the objects that you have chosen for your quilt.
- Iron the
fusible paper backed web to them.
- Arrange
the fabric scrap pieces onto the blocks, pinning them in place,
making sure to overlap thee edges. (it is ok for the fabric
to extend past the foundations edge as this will be trimmed
later.
- Once you
have finished your layout for the blocks, take the scrap pieces
off the muslin one at a time and iron them back on.
- Lightly
apply fray check to all the edges.
- Embellish
the patches with items you have collected using a variety of
methods: sewing, gluing, photo transfers, etc.
Now to
assemble your quilt:
- Trim the
4 blocks to 12 x 18 1/2". Sew them together in pairs, then
sew the pairs together using a 1//4" seam allowance. Press
the seams apart.
- Cut out
2- 41 1/4" x 44 1/2" strips and 2 4 1/4"
x 30 1/2" borders to the top and bottom.
- Lay the
pre-quilted backing face down on a flat service and then lay
the quilt over it.
- Tie or
knot the two pieces together.
- Bind the
quilt with the self binding method: fold the edge of the backing
1/2", then bring it over the top of the quilt. Pin in place,
then sew. Decorate the borders and complete any finishing touches.
Some fusible
adhesive tips:
- Wash all
your fabrics before fusing to remove any sizing.
- Press
the fabrics before fusing or you wrinkles will become permanently
bonded.
- When fusing
a large piece, start pressing in the middle and work outward
- If any
adhesive gets on your iron or ironing board, iron over a sheet
of fabric softner to remove it.
